PITA

One of my favorites was Pita, he was a handsome black-eyed white angora buck.  He was particularly clever, friendly, cute, and his cage always stank worse than any 5 others in the room.  He was dedicated!

The best Pita story was the two week period where every morning I came down to check on the guys, and there were suspicious poops scattered around the room.  Somebody had clearly been out, and had spent some quality time sitting on one of the cages with a lot of females in it, but try as I might, I couldn't figure it out.  Everyone was always tucked in their beds when I checked each cage.  Eventually I carefully checked all the lids and realized Pita had piled all his bedding under his wheel so it wouldn't turn, and then hopped on top of the wheel and chewed a hole in the lid, way in back where I wouldn't notice.  Every night he'd sneak out, roam around to his heart's content, and innocently be back into his cage for bed-check in the morning.

I have a video here of him attacking a tinkertoy piece suspended from a rope. I think it's quite funny: click here--Pita Attacks a rope--to see it.

Pita is gone now, but his cousins and descendents continue to plot and carry out mischief. Wouldn't have it any other way, except I worry as it gets harder and harder to outwit them!

My Favorites

I have always had a soft spot for the gray spectrum of mice, especially those gorgeous dark "blue" ones.  I've never been particularly into the hairless mice, I figure the more fur the better!  So I spent considerable time working on texels, particularly trying to get blue texels, but I always like to have a variety of colors.  Black-eyed whites are my next favorite, though I don't have any of these, or any texels, at the moment.  I changed focus for a bit and turned more toward broken merles, which I think are also spectacular.  So at the moment I have roans and merles, and now I have some brokens and I'll be getting broken merles from that soon.

The marked types don't usually show up as nicely on the non-standard coats, and my colony population lost the rex genes and the C dilute genes, so I'll need to bring some new mice in to get that going again.  I did bring in some very cute broken blue rexes that I had high hopes for, but the one litter I bred didn't thrive--some developed tumors, they were very sensitive to diet and lost hair, and many of them died young so I didn't breed another generation from them and will be on the lookout for new candidate rexes, texels, angoras, and Extreme Dilute "Ce" because I like the big eyes the Ce's have.
